Sunburn in Alanya: How Bad Is It and What Helps

Most sunburn is a first-degree burn: red, hot, painful skin that peels after a few days and heals without treatment. Cool the skin, drink more than usual, use a plain moisturiser and stay out of the sun. See a doctor if blisters cover a large area, or if there is fever, chills, dizziness or vomiting — that is sun poisoning, not just sunburn.

What it is

The ultraviolet index in Alanya in summer regularly reaches 9–11. At that level, untanned skin can burn in under twenty minutes, and the redness does not appear until two to six hours later — which is why people so often burn badly without noticing at the time.

Water, white sand and the wind on a boat all make it worse: water reflects UV upward and the wind removes the heat that would otherwise warn you.

What actually helps

  • Cool the skin. A cool (not ice-cold) shower or cool wet cloths, 10–15 minutes at a time.
  • Drink more than usual. Burnt skin loses fluid; dehydration is what turns a painful evening into a ruined week.
  • Moisturise with a plain, fragrance-free lotion or aloe vera. Apply while the skin is still damp.
  • Painkillers. Ibuprofen or paracetamol at normal doses reduce pain and inflammation, if you have no reason to avoid them.
  • Cover up completely until the redness has gone. Burnt skin burns again far more easily.

Do not put butter, yoghurt, vinegar, toothpaste or oil on a burn; do not use ice directly on the skin; do not burst blisters; and avoid creams containing benzocaine or lidocaine, which frequently cause allergic reactions on damaged skin.

When to call a doctor

  • Blisters over a large area, or on the face, hands or genitals
  • Fever above 38.5 °C, chills, severe headache, confusion, vomiting or fainting
  • Sunburn in a baby or a child under two
  • Increasing pain, spreading redness, swelling or pus after a few days — that is infection
  • Severe swelling of the face or eyelids
  • Sunburn on skin taking medicines that cause light sensitivity, such as some antibiotics, diuretics and acne treatments

FAQ

Sunburn: common questions

Mild sunburn fades in three to five days. A blistering burn takes one to two weeks and can leave the skin discoloured for months.

It is the everyday name for a severe sunburn reaction with systemic symptoms — fever, chills, nausea, dizziness, headache. It usually means significant fluid loss and inflammation and it should be assessed by a doctor.

No. Intact blisters are a sterile dressing. If one breaks by itself, wash gently with soap and water, cover with a clean non-stick dressing, and watch for signs of infection.

Not on the burnt skin. Cover it completely until the redness has gone, which usually means several days.
