Travel Insurance and Payment
How paying a private doctor in Turkey works, which documents you receive, and what to check in your policy before you need it.
How paying for a private doctor in Turkey works
In Turkey, a private doctor is paid directly by the patient at the time of the visit. Your travel insurer then reimburses you afterwards, against documents. Very few policies pay the doctor directly, and none of them pay against a handwritten note.
That is why the paperwork is part of the service here and not an afterthought. Every consultation — in the clinic or in your hotel room — ends with a signed medical report, an itemised invoice and a receipt, issued in English, stating the diagnosis, what was done and what it cost.
Payment
Three steps
You are quoted first
You pay the practice
You claim it back
Documents
What you receive in writing
- Medical report with the diagnosis, in English
- Itemised invoice — consultation, treatment, materials
- Receipt of payment
- Prescription valid in any Turkish pharmacy
- Copies re-sent by e-mail if you lose them
If your insurer needs a specific form or a particular wording, tell us before or during the visit — it is far easier to write it correctly the first time than to reissue it after you have flown home.
Worth knowing
Before you call your insurer
Policies differ more than people expect. Three things are worth checking in yours before you need it:
- Whether you must notify the insurer before treatment above a certain amount
- What excess (deductible) you pay yourself
- Whether the policy covers a private doctor, or only state hospitals
The European Health Insurance Card covers state healthcare in EU/EEA countries. Turkey is not part of that scheme, although some countries have separate bilateral arrangements. If you hold an EHIC or a national card, ask us before the visit and we will tell you what it will and will not do here.

Frequently asked questions
In most cases no — you pay the practice and claim the money back. Some insurers will arrange direct settlement for larger amounts if they are contacted in advance; if that applies to you, tell us before the visit.
